Parent's FAQs

How long does it take?

An apprenticeship is based around unit standards, so as soon as they’ve completed all the unit standards that make up the qualification, a National Certificate is awarded and the apprenticeship is completed.  Most people take between three and a half to four years to complete their apprenticeship.

What role does the employer play in training an apprentice?

It is up to the employer to ensure the apprentice works alongside qualified tradespeople to get exposure to all the types of work needed to complete their on-job training and become a well-rounded tradesperson. Essentially, they need to provide a good working environment that supports regular training and assessment using the ETITO Workplace Logbooks along with positive, constructive feedback.

Does my son or daughter need to do a pre-trade course before becoming an apprentice?

In short, no. Pre-trade courses are not a prerequisite to electrotechnology apprenticeships, however in some cases, if someone has basic electrotechnology skills under their belt it can be a good foot in the door. Pre-trade courses are offered at many different training providers, and no two courses are the same. It is worthwhile checking out the pre-trade course at your local training provider, as the course may cover a number of unit standards that are included in an electrotechnology National Certificate. If you’d like further advice around this, please contact your ETITO regional training manager.
